This is an excellent book. Mattick takes the story behind the story of Winnie the Pooh, and brings it one step further: Young Christopher Robin named his famous stuffed bear after a popular bear at the zoo - a bear named Winnipig, Winnie for short. The manner by which Winnie ended up at the zoo is quite touching, and demonstrates the far reaching effects of a single act of kindness. Arguably, the man who decided to save Winnie the bear changed history.
This is an excellent chance to implement our tenet "Knowledge is Power" - tell your students a true story, and use its truth to further your message. NOTE: There are aspects of this book which can be abridged, namely some redundant interaction between the son and the mother, who is telling the story. Additionally, this book could lead to some solid higher level discussion, if you can manage to get your older class to humor you by listening to book about Winnie the Pooh.
