A classic story about selflessness and community. Three wise travelers come upon an unhappy town, where nobody shares. Hungry, they decide to create Stone Soup – a soup apparently made with only hot water and stones. Curious, the villagers come to watch. While confidently stirring boiling water, the traveler sighs “You know what would really make this soup great? Carrots. Ah well, I suppose we will have to make due.”
It is here that the formerly closed-off farmer volunteers some carrots to add to the soup. This process continues until all the community members have participated in the creation of the Stone Soup – which they, in turn, all share. Through working together, and sharing a meal, the village learns to like one another – and the travelers leave the town much happier than when they found it.
Debrief Prompts:
*Note – This book highlights Asian food and dishes. It would be irresponsible if you did not ensure reader of this book is able to pronounce all foods correctly. Ideally, you should be able to answer any questions about the dishes as well. #Knowledge is Power.

Debrief Prompts:
- What was the point of making Stone Soup?
- Why do you think the villagers were happier at the end of the story?
- It was difficult for the villagers to share at the beginning. Why do you think that is? Can you describe a time when you’ve had trouble sharing?
- When have you ever enjoyed working with others?
- Did the stone actually do anything to make the soup taste good?
